What Are Stem Cells Anyway?

There has been huge debate in the news about stem cells, the president spoke out on the subject, and centers offering stem cell therapy are on the rise, but what are they and what do they do?

Well, the short answer is that stem cells are cells that can become and build any kind of tissue, they are like a blank cartridge that can be programmed to become almost any kind of cell in the body. They can go into the body and repair damaged organs or tissue, or even completely eliminate or reverse disease conditions.

There are different types of stem cell harvesting, and some stem cells are specific as to their function, but some are completely blank and can form any kind of tissue. For blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, the cells may be harvested from the bone marrow. For other conditions, cells may be harvested from cord blood, which is blood from the fetal umbilical cord, if it was saved. Cells are sometimes donated by a close family relative, and cells can be even be harvested from the patients own adipose (fat) tissue. Embryonic stem cells can only be obtained outside the country. Some places use stem cells from sheep.

According to our preliminary research, costs range from $7500.00 to $15,000.00 per treatment and up. Some patients require only one treatment, while others may need additional treatments.

Dr. Barmada from the Mississippi Stem Cell Therapy Center stated “It is a fascinating science and we really don’t have all the answers yet. Most of the time the therapy works, and sometimes it doesn’t, and we don’t know why, but I can tell you from my own personal observation that the patients who did not respond to the treatment were, well…, uh, let’s say ‘grumpy’ before the treatment, and the ones who did respond had a positive attitude. I found the same thing throughout my extensive experience in cardio-vascular surgery- people who are positive fare better and benefit more.”, suggesting there may be a quantum or spiritual component to the treatment.

For conditions like Parkinson’s, renal failure, auto-immune disorders, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, stoke, failing joints, and spinal cord injuries, stem cell therapy has already proven very effective, and who knows what this technology may lead to in the future?
